Pineapple Broom Plant Care: Moroccan Pineapple Broom Plants In Gardens

Looking for a reliable, small, hardy tree or shrub with fragrant flowers? Then look no further than the Moroccan pineapple broom.

Pineapple Broom Tree Information

This tall shrub or small tree hails from Morocco. Moroccan pineapple broom plants (Cytisus battandieri syn. Argyrocytisus battandieri) was named after French pharmacist and botanist, Jules Aimé Battandier, who was an authority on North-West African plants. It was introduced to European horticulture in 1922.

For many years, the plant was grown in greenhouses, as it was thought to be less hardy than has been more recently shown. It is reliably hardy down to 0° F. or -10° C. It is best grown outdoors with shelter from cold winds and in full sun.

Pineapple broom makes an excellent wall shrub, with 3-parted silvery-grey leaves producing yellow, erect, pea-shaped flowers in large upright cones having the scent of pineapple, hence the name. It has a rounded habit and can reach 4 m. (15 ft.) in height and spread. This plant received its RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 1984.

Pineapple Broom Plant Care

Moroccan pineapple broom plants are easily grown in light, sandy or gritty, well-drained soils in full sun. As they originally come from the Atlas Mountains, they tolerate heat, drought, poor soil and dry growing conditions. They prefer a south- or west-facing aspect.

Cuttings can be taken in June or July but may prove difficult to grow. Propagation is best from seed, which is first soaked overnight and sown from September to May.

Pruning Moroccan Pineapple Trees

Renewal pruning helps maintain attractive form and vigorous growth. However, if Moroccan pineapple broom plants are pruned severely, they will develop straggly water sprouts. It is, therefore, best to plant it in a spot where you won’t need to control its height.

The tree’s natural habit is informal, and it may have multiple trunks. If you prefer a single trunk, train your plant from a young age, removing any suckers or sprouts that appear low on the main stem. If allowed to, the pineapple broom can have multiple, suckering stems and will start to resemble a large shrub instead of a small tree.

Note: Although broom plants produce attractive, sweet-pea like blooms, they have become highly invasive in many areas. It is important to check with your local extension office before adding the plant or its relatives to your landscape to see if allowable in your area.

Broom

Description: Cytisus battandierii also known as Moroccan or Pineapple Boom is a medium-sized semi-evergreen tree with trifoliate silvery-grey leaves which are very silky when young. Its common name ‘Pineapple Tree’ comes from the pineapple scent of the large upright deep yellow pea-like flowers which appear in June, bearing a potent fragrance reminiscent of pineapples. The scent of the flowers is somewhat irresistible to bees and you will find them buzzing around the flowers over summer. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Cytisus Growing Tips: Best grown in well-drained soils in full sun and can be located in an open but not exposed situation. All parts (including the seeds) may cause mild stomach upset if eaten.

Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 3m

Cytisus Battandieri pruning - branches dying?

I've got a Cytisus which is now about 18 foot high, with four major trunks. It's getting too big and though I've tried pruning the top growth they're now too high for me to reach safely, so I want to reduce the size, and also remove one of the trunks.

Where I've cut anything but the brand new growth, however, it seems to injure the plant. The bark seems to die back, up to several feet below the cut, and in some cases whole branches have withered (see photo).

The main branch that I want to remove hangs over my lawn, and removal obviously would mean cutting near the base of the plant.

What's happening? and can I reshape the plant more drastically without killing it?

These plants really don't like heavy, hard pruning, being best with a good trim after flowering, other than removing dead wood.

You could take a risk and prune it back the way you want, and see what happens, but be prepared for the fact it might just die. Maybe its time for a replacement anyway, as yours has got so large and unmanageable.

How hardy are your plants?

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower. H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F). HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F). T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F) WT – Warm temperate – can withstand temperatures between 5-10 °C (41-50 °F) ST – Sub Tropical – are happy in temperatures between 10-15 °C (50 – 59 °F) TR – Tropical – can withstand temperatures above 15 °C (59 °F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.

We offer plants in a range of formats so what you receive varies from plant to plant. The images below show what you will receive for each format.
More information on how to care for each format can be found below.

Pineapple plants do not tolerate freezing temperatures. Any temperature below 28 degrees Fahrenheit can damage or kill the plant. Even if you don't experience long, deep freezes, even chilly weather below 60 degrees Fahrenheit can extend the amount of time it takes for the pineapple plant to mature. The flavor of the fruit will also be affected because cold weather makes the fruit taste more acidic.

Hot temperatures in excess of 90 degrees Fahrenheit can also affect the growth of a pineapple. If you regularly experience summer temperatures in the 90s or above, you may find that pineapple plants in your garden slow down their growth during the heat of the summer. The ideal temperature range for pineapple plants is from 65 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit and 70 percent to 80 percent humidity.
